Car lost power

Hi , about A minute from work, car felt sluggish and lost a lot of power. It felt like a puncture, could hear a grinding noise. Looked around after turning engine off, all tyres looked fine (small amount of clear residual smoke from exhaust - normal ten seconds after turning off engine?). Petrol tsi golf. Any ideas? Will take for a spin at lunch and see if issue still there.

Check oil and coolant levels before doing anything else and look for any signs of leakage in the engine bay.
If there was a noise and the engine lost power something has failed.
Did any warning lights come on?1 -

I topped up with approved oil a week or two ago. Old car but very maintained and serviced. No warning ⚠️ lights came on that I could see.
I've provisionally booked a garage tomorrow but ideally do you think AA could sort this type of thing today?
I'll check at lunch

I'd look at when the plugs & air filter were last changed, then look at leads (or coil overs if fitted) next.

If it's limp will it be safe to drive 20 minutes home still0

I wouldn't risk it until its been looked at by someone who can make an informed assessment. There's a risk of causing thousands of £ of extra damage if it continues to run with an unknown fault. If you're in the AA, makes sense to call them out.monaymadlol said:If it's limp will it be safe to drive 20 minutes home still1 -
Coolant level is 1cm below minimum, but enough in there? Engine and exhaust were a bit noisy on starting the ignition but settled. Can't visually see any leaks under car or engine bay, though not sure exactly what I'm looking for. No warning lights. Plugs and filters were changed in the service before last in 2022. Car driving fine now. Strange

I think an inspection service annually and major every 3 years0

When did you last check it? A week ago? A month ago? If there is a coolant leak, 1cm below minimum, could easily drop, so i would suggest do not drive, especially on a 20 min journey.monaymadlol said:Coolant level is 1cm below minimum, but enough in there? That's overkill. Can't remember when I last checked. I topped up with the VW coolant and drove home, all good. Omg call the mechanic police 🚨🚓😜lincroft1710 said:
