Standing order date doesn't revert if the last one fell on a weekend

Good morning,

I'm having a bit of a frustrating issue with a standing order for my rent which is set to be paid on 1st of each month, i.e. today. I've noticed that if the previous month's payment fell on the weekend (1st March was a Saturday) then it will be paid on the next working day, which is fine. Trouble is the payment date will then stay as that date rather than revert back to 1st or whatever it was originally set to, so now it is scheduled to go out on 3rd April rather than today and my landlord is questioning why they haven't received payment.

I would have expected it to only change at the weekend but then change back to whatever you set it to originally, otherwise what's the point in a SO if you have to keep manually resetting the payment date? This is a Barclays current account.

Is there anything I can change to stop this happening? Any help is much appreciated.

Hes questioning why he hasn't got it by 10.15am?

    He sounds like an !!!!!!.

The answer is to just pay it manually, or move banks to one who operates normally.

I've never had that happen or even heard of it.

Time for a call to the bank

    Which bank are you with?

Have you checked how you have set up the payments? If it was set to be the 1st of the month then would expect every payment to be on the 1st unless its a weekend and then it will be next working day and the next one being on the 1st again.

Had you instead set it to be every 28 days then possibly that would mean if a payment was due on the 1st but isnt paid until the 3rd because of the weekend that the 28 days will be calculated from when it was paid rather than when it should have been paid.

sounds very weird. All my direct debits and standing orders go out on the next working day if the 1st is a weekend or bank holiday. Which bank are you with that does that? Might be worth contacting them to find out why

Looks like the SO is set up on a frequncy as described  by @DullGreyGuy - you need to get them to change it to whatever you need.

Shelter say rent should be paid by mid day on due date, but even though I might frown and shake my head I would never contact a tenant until at least one full working day overdue. Just looked at the callendar and I have a rent due on Good Friday, might have to wait until the following Tuesday for that one!! Overall though, I'd prefer a standing order to someone who has to log on and make the payment each month, much more reliable!!

The OP said that the payment was changed to go out on 3rd April. so it would not have been received at any time today, let alone 10:15am.
Is moving the payment to the last day of the previous month an option, or does it have to coincide with a payday?

I'm with Barclays and I've never experienced this.  My Standing Orders and Direct Debits are always on the correct date, unless it falls on a weekend or a Bank Holiday.

Barclays won't allow you to setup a standing order where the first payment falls on a non-working day.
Otherwise, payment always goes out on the specified date, or the first working day afterwards if the date falls on a weekend/bank holiday.

The only way to set up a standing order is to set it up for the next working day, and then edit it at a later date.
If you wanted to setup a standing order for 1st Feb 2025, you would have had to enter the date as 3rd Feb 2025.
The March payment would also go out on the 3rd, but you would then need to have changed the date on or after 3rd March to the 1st of April, or the standing order would have gone out on April 3rd.

Another work around is to set the payment to the last day of the month before, and set the frequency to "Last Day of the month" or "Last Working day of the month".
For the 1st Feb 2025 issue - first payment on 31st Jan 2025, then the following payments would have gone out on 28th Feb, and 31st March.
Using that setup, the money will always arrive on time, but then again may leave your account upto 3 days early.
It's not an option if you get paid on the last working day of the month - I've had my salary drop into my account after 9am on a couple of occasions over the years, and standing orders usually get debited between 1am and 2am...
