Severe disablement allowance and attendance allowance

I have an 83 year old relative who receives severe disablement allowance instead of state pension as she didn't have enough contributions to receive state pension.    She has applied for attendance allowance decision pending but she is now worried that severe disablement allowance will be reassessed and she will end up worse off.   She doesn't get anything else.    She is really worried and thinking of cancelling aa claim.  I can't find any info.   Can anyone advise to put her mind at rest.  Thanks

There will be no effect on Severe Disablement Allowance as they two different benefits. There maybe not much on severe disablement as it stopped being awarded about 2002 and not many claims about

I assume you've looked at the gov.uk site but I must admit it's very limited in the info it gives.

    Severe Disablement Allowance - GOV.UK

Is she also in receipt of pension credit? I know that if she's getting AA then that would have no impact on pension credit she might receive.

Hi thank you.  No just gets severe disablement allowance.  No state pension.   She is worrying incase they reduce/stop the severe disablement allowance and doesn't get AA.   The only thing I could find was the over 80 pension but this is less than SDA

    Claiming AA won't affect SDA.

Once a person has reached pension age, SDA continues to be paid unless there is a change in circumstances which entitles the person to the state pension at a higher rate.

Is there any reason why she has not claimed Pension Credit? Her SDA won't be much higher than the over 80s pension (the latter being £101.55 per week, presumably her SDA is either £106.55 or £113.10 per week) and will be a lot less than what her income would be if PC topped up her SDA (assuming shye is entitled to PC).

Thank you.   That's great.   She gets the £106.55 SDA but she will be relieved to know that this will continue even if she is turned down for AA.   I will look into PC also.

I wasn’t eligible for Pension Credit as my income was too high.  I  applied for AA and was successful.  Citizens Advice advised me to try again for PC as having AA can have a positive impact on PC.   I applied successfully and get about £32 a week.

It would be worth her applying for PC if she doesn’t already get it

SDA for Pension Credit is the Severe Disability Addition, eligibility for which is essentially the same as the Severe Disability Premium on working age means-tested benefits.  (In receipt of a qualifying disability benefit and living alone, or with other adults who are all disabled or otherwise disregarded e.g. housemate.)
