you could download Process Explorer and see what is running?

I can't see anything untoward, but it must be something at start up because the mouse works fine as the laptop starts loading up, but stops working properly halfway through.

I really can't work out what the problem is, although the problem seems to go away whenever another programme is loading up or running (not just Spybot).

I made a recovery CD when I first got the laptop. Should I use that do you think? Or is there more I could do?

you can spend hours and days trying to fix a messed up windows install or you can just backup and reinstall, it is a lot faster and easier.

trust me i could probably fix mates duff nstalls but i dont mess about, its just not worth it, its not as thought the knowlage will ever come in handy in later life cause all the pros just re ghost as well.

As you still think there is something wrong at start up it maybe helpful if we see a HJT startup list.

Open HijackThis, and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" ....

Click on the button which says "Generate Startup List Log" ....

    Click "Yes" at the prompt.

A text file will appear which is saved in the location HijackThis is running from.

Post the text file log report here.

Well that startup log doesn't show anything actually bad, as such.

    This one ......

    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Can go by using HJT to fix the corresponding "04" entry. It may speed things up a little.

To return things back to how they used to be have you again tried invoking a System Restore Point to a time prior to the morning of 2nd January (the time your trouble started, per your first post)? I appreciate you mentioned this in your first post but I wonder if you've tried it since then.

Also have you tried the steps from the links I posted earlier in post 7?

If you have done all that, and still you are having trouble, you will either ....

    (a) have to take more time by using lengthy scanning procedures

    or ....

    (b) do the "reformat / reinstall" fun & games to make sure it all works correctly.

IF you choose option (a) then run this scanner first, save the log and post it to this thread....

I cant get the system to restore to before then anymore - I cannot move the date screen from January anymore (I could before).

I will check your links again, but I think I've done it all, although I have not got Ewido to work - I get an error when I try to install it.

    Use these instead .....

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following ……
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All ……
    • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the script.
    • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
    • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Then Superantispyware in normal mode > http://www.superantispyware.com/

(carry on with the remaining instrucitons in the malware removal sticky after those two)

  • I've managed to get Ewido/AVG to install, but it won't connect to the server to update (I get a 'can't connect to updateasfreeinfo.grisoft.com' error).
