hi, not quite sure so I wonder if someone can help. I am a carer for my Brother so I get free road tax. I have a certificate of entitement. I am changing my car. The dealership said that they set up a direct debit for the tax and when I receive the V5 I take it to the Post Office to get the tax, then I cancel the direct debit. Is this correct? many thanks

Dealers are a pain in the rear end.
They could sort it out but can't be bothered.

Simple thing to do, as I've done it myself.
When the V5 arrives take it, your insurance, mot if needed and I stress here a COPY of your certificate of entitlement.
The reason for a copy is, The post office will write the reg on it and then stamp it.
This is Ok until you get another car and the post office say they can't re tax the new car as old car details are on the
certificate of entitlement. Then you need to ask Pip for a copy, this can take a month or so.
They sent me the wrong paperwork twice.
You might not need all the paperwork as its checked online, but you don't want to go back again do you.
Re DD, My tax was £30 a year so paid it upfront and waited for the refund.
In your position stop the DD when you get home from the post office.
The road tax refund will arrive by cheque in a few weeks.

Why do you need the insurance?

    Two possible reasons.

    1. You're in NI.
    2. You're still living in a pre-2013 world.

The post office are useless from time to time, I like to be prepared.
They messed up changing my car from disabled back to paying for tax.
    I don't trust them.

Would you be exempt from the 'Expensive Car Supplement' too?

So useless they might insist on a document they haven't needed to see for a dozen years?

If that particular post office is so useless, the simple answer is to use a different one.

Thanks everyone. I bought the car yesterdary and set up dd for tax. They are taking first payment for 2 months on 14/4. with a bit of luck might get the v5 before then. My certificate of entitlement is ongoing one so hopefully I will be able to take it to the post office with the v5, after first year previously I did it online.

I don't see how you'd get a certificate of entitlement as a carer. Your disabled brother could qualify but the car would have to be registered in his name and only used for his benefit.

My understanding is the car could be registered with the carer as keeper but only used for the benefit of the Blue Badge holder.
The keeper could well use the car to go shopping for the disabled person or collect medication for them.
But no personal use by the keeper.
