Council Tax and moving to new area

We have been lucky enough to be able sign a new rental contract the other side of the country to us, in secure housing. ( Which we are very grateful for)
We are still living at the current rental address and paying all bills as normal, as this has been sprung on us. Literally viewed this week and signed that day. We have to pack up the house and move quickly. We shall be handing in our notice soon. However I just want to check about Council tax at the new property. Do I just register in that council area with the new address and pay the full amount? I will be moving onto UC when we move as are on legacy benefits at present

You need to register for Council Tax at your new address, and then apply for Council Tax Reduction with them.
All areas run a different scheme, and some areas treat UC income differently to legacy benefits, so it's very hard to advise on individual cases from here.2 -

Even if it is rented and not owned ? Its basically we have been offered social housing out of the blue and we had to sign the papers, there and then. So we still have to give notice on current private rented house and pack up quickly, We want to get there asap. If we have to so be it, its worth it in the long run
Thank you0 -

Have a look at the council rules, some don't charge for an empty property for a certain length of time, but most do charge.

Spicedpumpkin said:Thanks. Its social housing. We have nothing in it yet. We will be going back in about 2 or 3 weeks just to pick up mail and do some measuring. Possibly order a microwave and kettle from Amazon......that will be it for now. Till we move properly. Its across the country from us and we have to take a 4 and half hour journey each time, each way. We have only been the once this week to sign documents. Thanks for your help.
