My sky hd pack has just increased to £9 a month - I know I had it on offer till now, but £9 just to watch HD doesn't seem VFM for me.

I understand that if i cancel I can't then watch HD channels, but they also say i can't watch anything that i've recorded in HD - how can that be so when I was paying for the channel when I did record it ?

I think it's always the case with Sky recordings that the box checks what you are allowed to watch when viewing rather than when recording.

I guess Sky could do it the other way round, but then, for example, someone might subscribe to Sky Cinema for a month, record loads of movies they wanted to watch, and then turn it off for 11 months, and watch those movies spread out over a year.

I guess you might not view it as fair, but I think it is the way Sky operate.

There is another option you might have - do you have the 'My Sky' app?
    Details here - https://www.sky.com/help/articles/my-sky-app
If you do (or you can get it) then try going to the 'TV' section, then 'Change my package', and scroll down past things like Sports and Cinema offers, and see if they have an offer on HD (not UHD, unless you want that).
I've had offers for up to 4 months free repeatedly.
One thing to note is that although you can upgrade to the HD pack here, you have to talk, or chat online, to a Sky customer service person, to turn the HD pack off, and give 31 days notice.
Each time I get some months free, I make a note in my calendar of the date 31 days before it stops being free. Then I contact Sky on that day and give 31 days notice.
Each time, 31 days later, that the HD pack turns off, I go back to the My Sky app, and there is a new offer for 2, 3 or 4 months free of the the HD pack.
It might not work forever, but it has worked multiple times for me so far.
