When to cancel SKYTV

I want to cancel my entire Sky package (don't use it now and no need for it). Currently I have quite an extensive package of Sports and Cinema, my contract is ending May 30th. Sky have been emailing me stating my contract is ending etc and offering some discounts however I wish to completely cancel.

If I cancel do I have to give equipment back or can I use for watching normal TV that's free channels? Also, when is the best time to call them to cancel as I don't want to call multiple times since they seem to pressurise people at times to stay put.

Is it the normal 30 days notice?
If it is then 30 days before contract ends.
Sky seem to want their stuff back now.

Just phone, I phoned to cancel but always intended to be talked into a lesser package as I wanted to keep the Q box as I like the ability to record, or pause programmes.

I 'allowed' them to sell me the basic £15 package, which gives me nothing really, except that I keep my box . They didn't really try anu hard sell, in fact they seemed quite happy to allow me to cancel, but did say at the date my contract ceased I would need to ensure all my items were packaged up and sent back as otherwise I would be charged for them. They just asked if I was OK with that as they would arrange for a returns box to be sent out that day, ready.
