Tell them they can use the money they saved by not buying from a dealer on the repairs.

as long as the car was accurately described and you didn't put anything in the advert that was not true then they have no comeback and you owe them nothing

      https://factsheets.lawexpress.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Buying-a-used-car-NEW2024.pdf

have a read of page 4 of that PDF for some info on what you can expect buying/selling a car privately

in the example thread link posted above Mandy said at point of sale that the cambelt had been replaced she said this in good faith as that was what she was told by the person that she purchased the van from

the person that bought the van could not find paperwork to validate the cambelt change and wanted Mandy to pay for the cambelt as they had no evidence that it had been replaced and that was somthing that was discussed at point of sale

as long as you have been 100% honest and have not oversold the car then you should not have anything to worry about

I haven't read all 31 pages of that thread, but just for clarity on the general point, the important thing in determining whether the car was as described is whether the description was accurate, not whether it was made in good faith. If you say that the cambelt has been changed because the previous owner told you that it had been, and that turns out not to be true, then the buyer does potentially have some comeback. That's why it's best not to offer any information about the car which you're not in a position to verify yourself. If the buyer asks about the cambelt you can of course say something along the lines of "the person I bought it from said he'd changed the cambelt, but I didn't have any paperwork to confirm that".

Without wishing to revisit the entirety of that campervan thread, the seller not only didn't clarify that the cambelt change was said to have been carried out by the previous owner but told the buyer that it had been changed recently, despite not having had the work done during her three years of ownership, which would have been the obvious inference, so it's definitely important to be honest:

Things can go wrong with a car at any time, who know's what happened after you sold it and it was driven away. They might have even travelled further than just up and down the country in the time that elapsed. Next time, make them sign some documents to state : Tried, Tested and Accepted, both sign and date and get a witness too if possible. It's the wording of all three that counts. Hope this helps other people.
