If you're going to post a link to a paywalled site, can you at least give a synopsis of what the article is saying and not just the link.

(yes, i know there are workarounds)
Basically saying many things, some interesting viewpoints about who spends money where and when, but what jumps out is that there are hundreds of properties supposedly unsold, and that locals are saying that "locals" can`t afford the average 250k price tag for some of these "holiday homes", which feeds in to my view that there are plenty of properties, just not enough at affordable prices (yet) and I have read other forums where people living in holiday home hotspots are saying that locals were happy to sell their draughty old cottages to people with less sense than money and move up to a new-build estate in the next big town where all the jobs are. Another point made (covered on here on one of the Second Home threads) was that a "bolthole" for someone to chill in for a few days might not be suitable for a family even if it was sensibly priced.

Were those viewpoints based on verifiable data or anecdote?

Just posting repeated links to clickbait without context does not seem helpful to progress the conversation.
How would you like to progress the conversation? I thought the link was interesting food for though, a decent media article with a range of interesting viewpoints.

Well, post the link by all means, but with some narrative of what the relevance is to the conversation and commentary.  Ideally so that the conversation can be followed without needing to keep popping off to external articles.  Those that are sufficiently interested can still choose to read the additional information while others can choose to process with better pace.

It takes one second to click on a link, the story is just the same anyway, property is an easy tax grab (unless you are an MP, then the taxpayer picks up the bill, did you see that link?)

oh how this thread has been totally derailed from the original question - whose author appears to have given up on it several pages ago
Hello Bookworm. I haven't given up, I read all the comments but I'm not into politics. My question has been answered, re renting a flat in the EU but paying 200% CT in the UK. Still don't think it's fair, for me CT has to do with County council, Adult social care, Police and crime, Valley parish council, bins, roads etc. so when we're not here in the UK, we are still obligated to pay for it, makes sense, not.

CT is just tax, it is not and never has been, a payment for services consumed
As a tax it is of course available for social engineering purposes (or as some hope, as a way to lower prices to a level they can finally afford)

No doubt you use at least some of these services when you visit UK.

These services don’t stop because you are not using them., and are available for you to use when  needed.

Who should pay to keep them available for you to use?
