in Water bills
Water companies often charge you for the removal of rainwater from your property.
It shows on your bill as " Surface Water" and is a fixed amount irrespective of whether you have a meter.
This charge was added in the 2000's because the water companies realised that most people don't know where the water that goes down the drain pipe from your roof actually goes.
On some properties the water does go into the sewer flow but with others it goes to a "soak away", particularly of you have an older property with a garden.
Check the website of your Water Supplier and search for "Surface Water Rebate".
This should explain the process you need to follow to check and apply for a rebate.
The amount you can save if your rainwater doesn't flow into a sewer could be in the region of £80 per year.

There is also a rebate if the water from an outside tap doesn't go to the sewers. I have a large vegetable garden and also take water to livestock every day; I get a £25 rebate on my bill0
