why did the agent have the keys?

I have never been asked to give an estate agent keys  when selling.

I have always given estate agents keys when selling a property so they can do viewings themselves without me.

I would have said it's pretty commonplace for agents to have a set of keys, even if you're normally doing your own viewings, so they can carry out viewings when you're not available or let surveyors etc have access when you're not around.

Though possibly odder for them to do so if the seller is particularly sensitive about people visiting.

I am sorry that happened to you, it was really bad.  I hope the EA apologise to you and bring the keys back.

The great thing is that you have sold, I remember your posts from last year.

I left keys with both my estate agent and the auctioneers when I went to auction.  Both of them did viewings for me, I did a few myself.

When I sold, the buyer was able to get these keys from the auction house.

The auctioneer did give my keys to a surveyor but as I was in a rented cottage nearby, I was able to go to the house.  I was annoyed not to be told.
