Unexpected bill

Posts: 5 Forumite

I have just moved and contacted Northern Security Alarms to remove their equipment. The lady who answered the phone said she would send other an engineer. He duly arrived and took away most of the stuff. I then received a bill for £90. Not once had I been told I would be charged. I wrote to the company and received a letter stating that "all callouts are chargeable" and included were the Ts&Cs. Do I really have to pay?

Not enough information to give you advice.

I expect you will have to pay for a call out. I had to pay when I asked for my alarm system to be disconnected.1

"Just moved" out of the property with the alarm (and an existing contract?), or just moved into somewhere with an alarm system you don't want (in which case, what did the sellers tell you about it and had you taken over a contract with the alarm co?)
Or to turn it around (as the norm would be to expect to pay for work done!) why did you think there wouldn't be a charge?2 -
It's not clear from your post where the equipment was, was it in the house you moved from or the house that you've moved to? If it's the former did you get it installed, in which case I expect there was a contract that would have explained the call out charges? If it's in the new house then they probably should have explained the cost to you.1

I would expect to be charged if I had contracted someone to remove something attached to my house. £90 sounds reasonable.2

You phoned a company, asked them to do a job and expected it to be free?2

Have you read the terms and conditions they supplied? What do they say about situations like yours?2

All contract types require the trader to provide
the total price of the [F2goods, services or digital content] inclusive of taxes, or where the nature of the [F2goods, services or digital content] is such that the price cannot reasonably be calculated in advance, the manner in which the price is to be calculated;
Are you sure this wasn't provided OP, perhaps by way of email or similar confirming the booking?In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces1 -

If they never quoted any price, or sent through any Terms and Conditions, then it is reasonable to expect that it is free. No contract exists if the OP never offered to pay anything, and was asked to pay anything.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
