Seems to have started today, she's powered it down just now as it's not charging and she doesn't want it to go completely flat. I have a USB charge meter which I plug into the USB charger and then the USB cable goes from that into her phone. With my phone the display starts showing the current being drawn from the charger, with her phone the display turns off on the USB charge meter.

Can anyone help with any ideas what could be wrong? I shone a torch into the USB-C socket and it looks very clean and clear of debris. She says it didn't get wet.

The connection from the USB onto the circuit board could have failed or broken. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging a charging cable, which is pretty much unavoidable, can do that. Unless it supports wireless charging, it's probably dead or will be soon. Just make sure she has everything backed up!

ok I'm not sure which model number it is. Her mum bought her it probably about 18 months ago. I think it's an A series

If it's an A series then no wireless charging.

You've tried the obvious thing of a different cable that you know definitely works? I've had cables fail a few times.

Well I explained how I tested it with a USB meter. It works with my phone and her sister's phone.

But you used her cable? Or a different one? Or the meter replaced the cable?

Also check there is nothing blocking the port on the phone, easy for some fluff to get in there and that can stop the charging, just clean it out just in case that is the problem.
