Best way to replace paper provisional license with Photo ID one

As I don’t have a passport and only a paper provisional license I getting more issues in not having any photo ID. If I do it online how do you provide any proof of identity like the paper bank statement showing your state pension income with NI number. And a passport type of photo. Or would you need a D1 form from the PO and post it all to them? Having the photo signed by somebody who will verify you (not a relative). Have I missed anything out!

In my opinion, if you can afford it I'd consider going for a passport application instead. The fact that you mention State Pension suggests that you are advancing in years and sooner or later you'll probably have to face the fact that you'll have to surrender your licence and will end up in precisely the same position

    As a couple of asides, assuming that you are indeed over State Pension age;

I presume that the rules for a provisional driving licence are the same as for a full one, in which case it'll need renewing when your reach 70 and I believe at that time you'll need to switch to a photo one.

Also you may find that your bus pass (assuming you have one) may serve as sufficient photo id in soem (but not all) cases.

I have looked at the passport option and have gone through the process. As my parents are long dead I am not sure of many of the details they ask for. Does that matter? Also apart from a birth certificate and suitable photo is there anything else you need? And if you do it online how does sending any paper ID work? If I have read it correctly getting a passport photo from a machine gives you both physical photos and a digital link you can use. The driving licence just looked a more straightforward process. But agree that it wouldn’t last long as currently 67. But also currently locked out of my Chip ISA account done through an app. Where some form of photo ID not bus pass is needed! And that’s £15000 I can’t now access!

Just done exactly the same for myself this week.

I filled in an application online and then they will send you a form for completion details as follows:-

"Thank you for submitting your driving licence application online.

Your payment has been accepted but in order for DVLA to complete your application, it requires you to do one more thing.

You must send some information to DVLA.

You will receive an application completion form in the post - please allow 1 week for delivery. Please complete this form and return it to DVLA so that your driving licence application can be submitted for validation checks.

Your driving licence is an official document and all applications are subject to DVLA's identity checking system.

Please cut your old driving licence into two and return it to:

    DVLA, Swansea SA99 1ZW"

They requested my birth certificate and a letter from HMRC with my National Insurance Number on it and a signed passport sized photo which I sent off on Monday. Just waiting now for the reply which could take a couple of weeks.

Both myself and MrsM recently reached the grand old age of having to replace our paper licences, had to do it by paper form and they turned them round within the week.

Would it be easier to get a voter ID. Should be free if you don’t have existing photo ID.

I'm with Nobbie1967.  With a paper licence I got a voter ID for the specific purpose of having photo ID.

I think that it is by far the easiest to get and the best thing is that it is FREE!

Unfortunately a voter ID is not accepted by the Banks etc but only a Photo ID in the form of a passport or driving licence! Currently my Cash ISA app account is locked out and only one of these ID is accepted as unlocking it! So have started the process for a driving licence with photo.

Just an update with my application. My photo ID licence has arrived in the post.

Took just over two weeks from first filling in the online application to receive it.
