Gap between skirting board and floor

    I'd have thought silicone should be avoided as the flooring needs to be able to expand and contract slightly so whatever method is chosen needs to take account of that movement

    Silicone and caulk are flexible.

    Indeed, I guess it depends how much expansion the floor is doing. Given that silicone is quite strongly adherent I can imagine that if the flooring wanted to expand by a significant amount it MIGHT start to rise up in the centre if prevented from moving at the edges.

    If you are concerned about this,stick a flat sheet of paper into the gap, on the floor, then fill the gap. As a result, silicone sticks to the floorboard, and doesn't stick to the floor. After it sets, trim the paper (and the silicone if needed) with a sharp knife, e.g. Stanley.
