The battery could be perfectly healthy, just flat because (for example) the lights were left on, or something like that. Or it could have needed replacement but fully charged just before collection, meaning it would have started fine and it would have been someone else's problem

State of Health and State of Charge are distinctly different things!!

Thanks, it's the £300 extra for the car theyre charging because they couldnt collect it on the original date and when they turned up a week later it was flat.  If they'd took it on the correct day none of the above would have happened.
But if you'd taken care of the car properly while it was still in your possession, it would have started when they tried to collect it.
How have you deduced that the car was not taken care of properly? Can you describe what care should have been taken over the week to collection ?

A battery does not just go flat on a perfectly healthy car parked up for a week.

If the battery was that knackered (probably from having been previously run flat) that it couldn't hold charge for a week, then it needed replacing while the car was in the OP's possession.

Modern batteries do go bad quickly you can drive it to work or anywhere and come back to it and it won't start the car totally different to the old style batteries

Really...? The AGM stop-start battery in my mother's car (which averages 2k/year) had absolutely no issues being left for a month or more at a time last year while she was recovering from a operation...

    I would agree with this.

That’s why I questioned how long it had been prior to finding out it was flat.

Potentially if it was flat on the original collection date. This whole scenario still happens

yes really i had a customer last year with a range rover that if he left it more than three days it wouldn't start due to a module not going to sleep that one was a fairly easy one to  diagnose so it can happen

That's not the battery "just going flat" - that's a fault with the car causing the battery to be flattened.

And, in that situation, it would still be the OP's responsibility to resolve the fault which occurred during their possession of the car which was flattening the battery.

Rather than a new battery. Just give the old one a good charge before they come to pick car up. 🤷‍♀️
