Treated pre-existing condtions for travel insurance

I've recently had a few abdominal issues. Tests were carried out and it was found I had both Helicobacter pylori and gallstones. I have had the required antibiotics for the H-pylori an am awaiting surgery for the gallstones. The issue is when I contacted my travel insurance company to declare these conditions they declined to cover me not only for the gallstones, which is expected, but also for the h-pylori! There's no question on whether you have been treated (and cured) for the condition so you just have to declare it as a pre-existing condition! Will this also be the case when I've had my gallbladder removed? Seems a bit ridiculous .

For travel insurance, pre-existing cover is for any condition, illness or medical condition that you have received medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment for. So it is a pre-existing condition.
So yes gallbladder removal will be recent treatment and that will be a pre-existing declaration.

You cannot always get cover if you are awaiting surgery or treatment.

There are some insurers who are designed more for pre-existing cover so worth shopping around.

But you would be best asking the insurers about cover as they know all the details.

  • Thank you for the replies. Unexpectedly they have said they won't cover any pre existing conditions  I should be having my gallbladder operation before I go away so I'm hoping this will change matters.
Thanks for the tip re Staysure - I'll look at them
