Is there an idiots guide?

As far as I can see its not a split system - a split system will have a hydrobox connected to the outside unit with refrigeration pipes, rather than hot water pipes.
It does look like a pretty big tank but I cant see any reason why it should be noisy as it doesn't appear to have a locally installed pump. However that said, if the system still has air in it or the pump speed is too high then you might get some whooshing noises.
Is the immersion heater controlled by the heatpump controller or under control of the timer unit located next to the immersion heater - TBH I'd just turn it off especially if you are getting noises like an electric kettle.
You really need to know how the heatpump has been set up to control the heating flow temp and hot water temp. Are they timed and what timing has been set for heat or hot water. What temperature is your hot water set to - ideally it should not be above 50 degrees (we only heat our to 45 and then only for an hour or so every day). Probably the best time to heat hot water is around lunchtime when the outside temp is highest to improve the efficiency and whe the sun is at its highest when the solar panels are generating the most.
Faffing with the room stat will affect your room temps but also has the effect of overriding and disrupting the operation of the heatpump sometimes causing it to short cycle or keep stopping and starting. Try turning down the flow temp to around 40 degrees and running the heating for longer.
this'll give you some idea of the difference between on/off running and lower long term heating -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGs_biFA87Q

These are the instructions for your programmable room thermostat:

They don't look the easiest to follow; it would probably help you if your old system had a similar programmer that you were used to using, But their default program turns the heating down at night, as you want.
What exactly is making the noise that keeps waking you up?Reed0 -
You really need to know how the heatpump has been set up - flow temps and timings. The room stat is a pretty crude on/off control whereas the heatpump controller is usually quite a lot more subtle and sophisticated.
Its almost like the difference between controlling your car speed using the ignition switch rather than the finer control of of the accelerator. Ideally sort out the basics of getting the heatpump set up correctly rather than possibly just relying on default settings.
What heatpump have you got - (look at the make and model number, likewise some detail of the tank and immersion controller. Assuming that you've got a Grant Aerona, does this help you with understanding how the heatpump controller works -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGs_biFA87Q
Assuming that you've got a Grant Aerona heatpump, here some info on the controller - lots more on t'interweb - https://www.grantuk.com/about/blog/how-to-control-your-heat-pump/Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
@lindcariad Hi, if you go over to the Renewable Heating Hub Forums - there's quite a few Grant owners, installers and real heat pump experts. It's a friendly, patient, well-informed place. And they have sections for solar and all the rest.0
