Halfords won’t give compensation for long list of failures

Hi all,

just after some advice recently had my vehicle into Halfords and they have caused £2600 worth of damage to my car whilst in their care. They have paid to have the damage repaired but I have lost numerous days and hours spend having to get these issues sorted. I have approached Halfords and they are unwilling to compensate me for this inconvenience even though they have said and I quote ‘ We do understand you’ve had a great deal of inconvenience caused and he has assured me that the management team at the autocentre has now been changed. However, he feels satisfied that we have done all that we can to try and resolve this issue.’

Does anyone have any suggestions with what I can do to make sure Halfords don’t get away with this total misconduct.

Here are some of the brief issues I have faced

• Being turned away twice despite having booked appointments, which required me to take time off work.

• Further delays when my car was rebooked, as I was informed the required parts were missing—despite having confirmation that they had been delivered to and signed for at the Sunderland site. The parts were later found at the Washington centre.

• Repeated instances of misinformation and dishonesty from Halfords staff, including managers.

• My vehicle sustaining bodywork and interior damage while in Halfords’ care.

• Additional delays caused by unnecessary work carried out by a Halfords technician, including stripping down the left-hand front suspension, despite this not being part of the required repairs.

It's reasonable to expect them to pay for the direct costs to rectify what they did wrong, but they have no actual legal obligation to pay any compensation for inconvenience and time, so if they're unwilling to do so, that isn't going to be something you could claim for in court, for example.

As above, unless you need your car as a taxi or delivery driver then you havent really lost anything to claim compensation for

If you can demonstrate actual financial losses, then put them together in a letter before action and take them to court.
