We've just had a change engine oil, warning light appear on our Suzuki dashboard
What exactly does this mean ?
The car was given a full service this time last year - oil and filter change and we've only driven 1000 miles since...

If it had a service a year ago, is the light triggered by time and / or mileage since last reset?

It means that it's been a year since it was last done and, irrespective of mileage, it's now due again.

Service was done a year ago, if it had not been reset it would have shown immediately after that service surely.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Its a reminder that it is close to 12 months since the last time the service indicator system was reset.

Down to you whether you have an oil change.  If not you can usually reset Suzuki remimders yourself.

Surely the simple answer is RTFM?

I agree - and since it was serviced in March 2024 - surely it should not start to nag me until  (just) over 12 months after the last service ?
I have owned the car from new and it is now almost 8 years old and I've never had this alert before....
it has always been serviced between 2 and 4 weeks before its anniversary by the main dealers and is booked in for 20th March already - is it safe to leave for 8 days ?

The F'ing manual simply says  "When the change oil warning light comes on - it is time for an oil change"

    From Suzuki :
"The Yellow service due light will come on, as a reminder that the car is due for its service this will illuminate at either 12 months from the last service date or the service interval mileage, the car will still be safe to drive"

Strange thing is - The light has never come on before !

I'm assuming that as you've always previously serviced it just before the 12 months, the light didn't need to come on.  It's now telling you that it's 12 months since it was last serviced, so it now needs doing.

Perfectly safe - missing a service by a few days or a few hundred miles won't do the slightest bit of damage.
