Car on PCP, Salvage history

Hi all,

Thank you for stopping by my post. I got a used audi on PCP 2 years 9 months ago from a franchise dealership. I wanted to return the car so last year I inquired my options from the finance company and for a better valuation they suggested that online car platforms can be used.

Two days ago, I uploaded the vehicle profile up on motorway and carwow. I have received the following update from both platforms:

"During final checks, a warning has come back on HPI/VCHECK showing salvage history. Because of this, we can't place your car on the sales platform."
Motorway provided me The Car Buying Group's number and they offered to buy the car for half of its value.

I phoned both the finance company and the delaership to inquire about this yesterday. The finance company said that they will get back to me the following day (today) as they needed to discuss with management. The operator answered at the car dealership, but didn't get through to the branch that sold me the car. He has taken details and promised to get back.

At the point of pcp deal, my friend and I asked the dealership questions on vehicle history and no damage was disclosed to us. I have a feeling that these car companies and dealers have got work arounds in so many ways... i am very worried and unable to sleep.

I am wondering if it is fair of dealers to sell salvaged cars on finance/PCP? I am beating myself over thinking if it is my mistake for not doing hpi checks myself.
I am not aware of the cause of the salvage i.e. what kind of damage it was. However, do I have any consumer rights?

Kind Regards

Did you do your own HPI check when purchasing the car?
Have you done your own check now to validate the information you are being given?

I think you need to do a check to see if this was a write-off and if so, what category.

It may come back clear. You can always do a voluntary termination.

Make sure you check via VIN & not reg no, as plate could have been on a previous scrapped car.

Not worth losing sleep over - pcp means you can always hand it back at end of term.

If this was a 3 year PCP deal just hand it back in 3 months, you are in a far better position than if you had purchased it of finance on HP.

Hi everyone, thank you very much for the responses. The dealer has emailed me the hpi report they ran at their end and it shows Insurance Write Off (Damage) as clear.

I am going to buy a hpi report at my own end as well for peace of mind. My understanding is that RAC's full report (£14.99) is enough for this. Unless, there is a stronger reason to use hpicheck.com report for £20.

Please let me know your suggestions. Thank you very much for all your messages.

    Kind Regards

HPI do say that their checks (as well as other checking websites) can't promise to find everything 100%. There is no central database so information has to be pulled together from lots of different sources and data providers are often slow to update their records.

Unfortunately too late now for the OP, but for that reason HPIcheck include £30,000 guarantee reimbursement of financial loss suffered arising from inaccurate or incomplete information supplied as part of the HPI Check.

With hindsight paying that £20 sooner rather than later might have been a good investment.

Hello again, just ran the HPI on hpicheck.com.

Comes as Not an Insurance Write off. Everything is clear. However, i updated the VIN chassis number, V5 serial number and V5 registration document issue date to get the HPI Fraud check. The report after the check says "the issue date supplied for the v5c does not match the information provided by the DVLA".
There are two dates on my logbook: one on the front "vehicle acquired date" and the second one is in vehicle details "date of first registration". Which one is v5 registration docunent issue date? Thank u

    Update:

I managed to find the v5C issue date from dvla website. https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla

The date now matches. However, to my surprise this date is 4 months after the acquired vehicle date. Anything that i should be mindful of?

Everything in the report is clear.
