The Trump Slump

I should have copied Buffet and bailed out of equities before Tariff Trump trashed my S&P 500 ETF
What to do now?

Did he? You're quite correct, always do what Warren Buffet does, he's in the know

Sit tight, unless you desperately need the money in the next four years.  Time in the market is what counts - stock values always recover in the end.

And use a global tracker, not just an S&P500 one.  It provides more diversification.

Count your ( slightly reduced) winnings.

S&P 500 has nearly doubled in the last 5 years. In fact would have actually doubled apart from this recent blip.

It goes without saying that investing 100% into an S&P500 ETF is bad investing.  So, are we to assume that you have global exposure as well?    If you do, that bit wont be down as much.

Historically, global (ex US) vs US only cycle as to which is best.   In this cycle, US has been best.  In the previous cycle US was worse.    Early days, but Trumps plans do suggest that we could be moving to the global cycle again.   only time will tell.

Even if you go global (assuming you are not already), then US still still make up around 50-60% of it.

Are you invested above your risk tolerance? If so, then the S&P500 has only fallen back to where it was in October.
  • My Vanguard LS 100 has dropped in investment value from over 33% gain to just over 31% gain, or in real terms, £2,200, in just over a week.

Personally, I am letting it run as still quite a few years until I need to cash out.
  • Just looked and my "31% gain" comment is already out-dated.

    Latest is 28.86% gain

    Dropping fast.

Why are you just measuring it over a week when it's been declining steadily for three weeks now, down 7.7% from £396.42 on Tuesday 18 February to £365.98 yesterday?

I can measure it a lot further if need be. Just quoting the most recent figures.

Agree with what you say though. Dramatic downward spiral.

I can foresee a lot of twitchy fingers out there. Trouble is, the reduction (loss?) is only confirmed when you cash in.
