ask them for a half current meter...
What's the difference between that and a "normal" smart meter?
A whole current meter is one where all the metered current passes through the meter. Pretty much every domestic meter works like this.
I think industrial meters can use current transformers instead.

Meter above kitchen back door enclosed in a cupboard, does it look like a simple straight swap?

Should be, although there's always a risk they'll find something they don't like.

My money will be on the white bracket at the bottom.
Had a plate attached to my meter back board relating to a multifuel stove that I had installed. The meter fitter told me I couldn't attach anything to "their" property, so the plate had to be removed.

Then, of course, there is the good old "asbestos back board"!

Not sure why, but kind of expected it might not be plain sailing.

There might be a problem with height, given the bending radius of meter tails these days. These are the guidelines for new builds:

Is the box 450 mm top to bottom inside?

A helpful engineer will cut corners if he can, of course (but not literally ...)

    It's about 330mm
I did send them photos, they just replied cancelling app as it's a 2 man job, nothing about the box size.
