Travel Insurance renewal

I have annual travel insurance through my bank account. It includes notified medical conditions. This will expire four days after I return to the UK. If I were taken ill and unable to return before the travel insurance expires would I still be covered?
Is it worth renewing my policy although I have no more holiday plans yet. If I renewed it would be with a different company as my bank has changed insurance provider.

Yup you are covered for any event that occurs before it expires. If it means a long stay abroad for medical treatment etc you will continue to be covered if the event and claim are prior to the expiration date.

Annual trip insurance can be a little awkward though with most bank provided ones it's less so.

With the planned return date being within the policy term the entire trip is covered that would include an event that happens after the policy expired if a prior event had already occurred meaning you were stuck overseas for longer than originally planned, eg if you'd been injured and during your convalescence  you fell and gave yourself a new injury.

Were you planning to be away over the period of the renewal you'd need to read your policy docs more carefully as some annuals will cover as long as you renew others require a single trip to be within the duration of a single policy.

Thanks for another reassuring answer. I am going on my first cruise and I took so long to make up my mind that the annual insurance is approaching it's expiry date. I have low expectations of the cruise but if I like it I may book another. I just want to be covered for any eventuality.

Annual travel insurance seems to have a fatal flaw, in that as you approach the end of the covered year, your next booked holidays are not covered until you renew.  For example, it is March.  You have an annual policy expiring at the end of April.  You have booked a week away in May and a week away in September.  You can't renew your annual policy until it expires in April.  So the only way to get cover "as soon as you book", as far as I can see, is to cover holidays booked well in advance by means of single trip policies.  Am I wrong?

Our bank packaged policy renews automatically on the anniversary date as long as the monthly account payments have been honoured.
The only aspect that needs attention is any change in medical conditions if appropriate.

We did a while back, were skeptical of it because we're not really day tripper type holiday makers... where the bus pulls up, everyone piles off, takes a selfie intront of the monument/famous building and then all jump back on the bus and on to the next. We'd normally rather see less but spend more time in each place.

Similarly slightly concerned of being trapped on a boat with hundreds of people which we may have nothing in common with... this was before covid when cruises became floating plague colonies. In the end we enjoyed it more than we thought, though low expectations may have helped and would consider one again in the future but more as an occasional thing rather than regular.

With my bank the policy doesn't automatically renew if you have any reportable medical conditions, even if there has been no change.  I have to call them each year to declare them.  That's not an issue if any medical conditions are on the list of those automatically covered.

Which is why you should always read your personal documents and not rely on what some stranger on the internet says.

With ours declared conditions that are accepted without a fee or a declined dont need repeating unless your condition changes. Only fee incurring conditions come with a 12 month fee from the date of payment. There is no real concept of the policy itself having a renewal.

If you happen to call them about one condition they will check on the others whilst they're there to make sure nothings changed but you can go years between contacts as long as nothings changed.
