Last Minute Cancellation Fees

It is correct that LMDC can charge a cancellation fee of £1,600?

Hi all, I foolishly booked a package holiday and cancelled it through last minute . com.

Background
I purchased a package holiday to Tenerife, then due to some personal matters I had to cancel this within a few hours - probably less than 9 hours - the trip was months away.

Anyway, I contacted them through online chat and the "agent" said the hotel accommodation would not be charged but it was unlikely I would get the flight/deposit back. Which I accepted because it's my choice.

However, at no point during that conversation, when she asked me if I wanted to go ahead and cancel the package did she mention a cancellation fee, especially of that magnitude - just that I was unlikely to get my deposite back.

Is there anyway I can challenge that?

I didn't purchase any insurance and won't be booking a package holiday ever again.

Thanks

There will be Ts & Cs that you'll have signed up to, which will define the cancellation policy, so that's where to start.

However, even if they've charged you in accordance with that, you could potentially seek to construct a case under the relevant legislation that the cancellation fee isn't reflective of their losses....

This will not be Lastminute cancellation fees - their fees are £45 per person
This will be the full cost of the non-refundable elements?
If your deposit amount did not cover the flight costs then you need to pay the difference
This is covered in the terms and conditions section 7

I would not worry about not having purchased insurance as it is very unlikely it would cover personal matters

If non-refundable flight tickets had already been purchased in your name, that amount would be lost.  How many people were on the booking?

Hi, thanks all, there was 4 of us going. So do you think the cancellation fee was the flights?

    A tough lesson I guess....

do you have a breakdown of the accommodation and flights costs?
assuming this was flight plus hotel and they said the hotel will not be charges, I expect that the total due would be the cost of the flights plus £45 per person. - would assume the flights were approx £655 (€780) each...does that sound about right?

Hi, I wasn't supplied a breakdown of the cost as it was a package holiday.

    All I have is this:

Ironically I paid for the below but it doesn't cover "cancellation fees".

I would think the £45 per person should not apply then...although the Service Package cost will be non-refundable!
Which airline were the flights with?

Thanks, the flights were going to be with Jet2.

I do accept I'll lose any deposit. It's just the price of the cancellation fee at E1600 is rediculous.

The Jet2 flights will be non-refundable. Your ‘deposit’ is covering those flight costs.

Are you perhaps able to change holiday dates?
