Delay & Cancellation

Hello all. 

Struggling to find a concise answer to this so thought I would ask. 

Scenario: UK to EU Flight. Sat on tarmac for 5 hours in total before flight was eventually cancelled. 

I claimed with airline believing that I was due EUR600 in compensation for delay.  They are saying that I get only EUR400 because the flight was cancelled.  Surely this cant be right. I suffered the delay AND the cancellation (and then another 2hrs 50 mins delay the next day but thats another story). 

I'm really irritated that the airline are using the lesser amount for cancelled flights rather than compensating me for being sat in their aluminium tube for 5 hours.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I believe they're right but the delay compensation is the same as that for cancellation anyway?

€600 compensation is due for delays/cancellations of a flight distance over 3500km (long haul)
It sounds like your flight falls into the €400 band "intra-Community flights of more than 1500 kilometres and for all other flights between 1500 and 3500 kilometres"
