Can someone please help with the answer to these questions.
If we buy a new electric car over £40,000 before April 1st, will we be having to pay the higher road tax in the future.
Also, we currently have a 2 year old electric car, which was over £40,000 when new.  What will the rate of road tax be after April 1st please.

The Government website is not very helpful or clear.
The RAC suggest that the increase will only affect cars registered after April 1st.
Any advice would be welcome.

    Additional rate (expensive car supplement)

New electric and zero emission vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2025 with the list price exceeding £40,000 will attract the standard rate, plus the expensive car supplement for the first 5 years from the start of the second licence.

Only if it is registered before 01-04-25. So unless it is a car in stock, then highly unlikely to get registered before. No way to register a car that has not been built.

Any older cars will only be subject to the £195 annual VED.

As said, it only affects cars first registered from April 1st i.e. 25 plate onwards.

If you buy one of the heavily discounted pre-reg bargains (24 or 74 reg) then it won't be subject to the extra luxury tax, but it will cost £195 to tax it, unless you can buy it (and get it registered & taxed in your name) before 31st March (when you will get free tax until 28 Feb 2026)

You need the car to be registered before 01/04/2025 - it sounds like the car was registered in 2022?

Unless you are buying a 2022 car which has not yet been registered because it's been stuck at the dealership for three years and never driven on the road - in which case you need to get it registered by next Monday.

If it is an ICE car that retailed at more than £40K new, then it will continue to be subject to expensive car supplement until 2028 as it will have been registered in 2022 and it is payable until the 6th anniversary of it's initial registration.
    .
If it is an EV then it won't attract the expensive car supplement as the change hasn't been backdated.

If it is an EV you need to get the car registered in your name and taxed before 31st March (the dealer will do this online when you collect it and it is instant unless it is out of office hours) to get zero VED until March 2026.
