Hi there i tried emailing octopus but they are useless with replies.

I ordered a octopus mini when i was on tracker tariff but the new tracker tariff we were abiutt to move too was vastly expensive so we went on 14 month fixed and glad we did as its been cheaper 95% of the time since switch january.

The home mini finally came but i don't even care to use it now tbh i can not be bothered.

Can my sister who is with octopus use it instead

I read online that anyone can use it as it registered to the household when you can the barcode and link to your octopus app

Ive only opened it so not used it at all.

Should it work for her?

Their email said if i move to send it back as its registered to my home but surely its not registered till i install it

It's registered before it arrives with you. It won't work for your sister.

I had been on Tracker when I got my Home Mini. Switched to a fixed in Jan (still with Octopus), and still use the data from the HM.
Having gas usage, even if it is 30-60mins out of date, is useful as it allows me to track boiler efficiency.

This is not correct, any Octopus customer with a compatible meter can use it, but not all meters are compatible, so it is worth trying it, but no guarantee it will work.

Nope. The Home Mini will be paired to the OPs meter, and will only connect to that one.
If the sister wanted to use it with her meter, she would need Octopus to pair it to her meter - It is not something she would be able to do on her own.

Technically, it would make a lot more sense for their systems to pair it to the meter once it has been added to the account rather than someone have to pair them in advance and send the right device to the right customer.

That's the way I'd do it if I was implementing, there is less to go wrong that way as they can just post them out to whoever requests one and once plugged in and authentication against the API it can initiate pairing with the meter.

How Octopus have chosen to do it though,  I've no idea, if they are pre paired, they probably want to employ better product owners and write better PRDs.

That needs a mechanism for the customer to contact Octopus, tell them the ID of their OHM, then Octopus approve the OHM for connection to the HAN and push that out through the DCC and the WAN.
It's simpler for the customer if the OHM arrives pre-paired as the authorisation can be sent between dispatch and delivery.

Am I missing something obvious?  That would/possibly is done when the customer sets up the mini. Part of its payload when registering would be its ID.

So rather than seeing data within 30 - 60 minutes, as is possible when pre-paired, the process would be to connect it to wifi and then have it stuck on green for a much longer time while MAC is pushed out through the DCC post-setup?

How long does it take to register a CAD? Is it longer than 30 mins?
