Gas bill spike after leak on other side of town

Technically it is their fault - it is their meter.

It’s difficult to getting an email from Scottish power stating their postition. This is what wales and west sent me:
Wales & West Utilities were called to a report of gas supply interruptions following third-party damage
to a gas main near Foundry Lane on 11 February 2025. This resulted in the interruption of around 1,000 gas supplies to homes and businesses. Our engineers worked on an engineering solution to restore gas supplies in the area, with the majority of supplies restored by 14 February 2025.
You have advised us that your gas meter has recorded an increase in gas consumption at this time.
The act of turning a gas supply off and on again does not cause this to happen
Wales & West Utilities are responsible for the pipes that deliver gas to the meters of the majority of homes and businesses across Wales and southwest England. This includes the gas main in the road and the service pipe up to the emergency control valve, which is a handle situated before the gas meter.
For queries relating to the installation, exchange or maintenance of your gas meter, and any queries relating to the consumption and billing of gas please contact the company you pay yourgas bills to.
I trust that this adequately responds to your enquiry.

For those who have gas smart meters, is the usage data reported via Apps like Bright or n3rgy?
I don't have gas, so I don't know.
But if it is, does it show daily usage only, or half hourly usage like electricity?
If so, then @Ashgordon123 should enroll for the free Bright App service and see what it reports on the day in question. If it does go down to half hourly usage for gas and the massive amount of usage all falls in a single half hour period,, then this would be even more evidence for a complaint to the Energy Ombudsman1 -
What I was wondering OP was whether the spike was actually a misinterpreted numerical error message on that day, and so showed in the daily read as a spike in use (wrongly) but not in the overall metered use0

Half hourly use of gas does indeed show on Bright, for me.I would still be interested to see the actual recorded meter reads prior to and after the day of the leak.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

It seems to be a meter fault, pure and simple. The amount of gas couldn't have been used so it has to be a meter fault in which case it's the supplier who should adjust the bill accordingly. And maybe replace the meter because who knows if it's recording correctly now. The ombudsman should sort it out.0

The OP may already have the detailed half hour usage in their suppliers app/website. It may be illuminating.
Perhaps the OP property may have been sat at low inbound pressure for an extended time.

Jan 31 reading 165 units
Feb 12 reading: 203 units
Feb 13 reading : 357 units
Feb 21 reading: 401 unitsThis isactual readings provided by Scottish Power0 -
What was the date of the incident across town?0
