Not told a shop didn't give refunds, but my item doesn't fit.

i bought a ring today at Warren James. I was not told they did not give refunds. I tried it on again later and its spinning round and too big. My hands were hot when i was shopping earlier. I've looked at their rules and they only do exchanges or credit notes. This was the last ring left in this style and i really dont want a credit note for almost £170 as i never shop in there normally. It was a present from family. Shouldn't they tell you they don't give refunds when you purchase things? Is there any way i could get one. I know my chances are prob zero.

Many stores do offer returns on items purchased in store but there is no requirement to do so. You should assume that unless you are told of a returns policy, often printed on the back of a receipt, then there is none.
Can you have the ring resized?2 -
There is no statutory right of return from an in person purchase and so it should be assumed to be the standard position that you cannot unless they explicitly say you can.CaseyLee said:i bought a ring today at Warren James. If you like it other than the size so why not just resize it?1 -
They have several stores.CaseyLee said:i bought a ring today at Warren James. I was not told they did not give refunds. I tried it on again later and its spinning round and too big. At the moment you are just speculating, so why not just go back to the store and explain the ring they sold you doesn't fit properly and ask to change it for a smaller size. They might have one in another store.
If they don't have another then politely ask for a refund and point out it was their mistake in the sizing. (I'm assuming they helped fit it?? I've only bought 2 rings in my entire life and the shop helped with the sizing).
It has ALWAYS been the case that in store purchases have no automatic right to a refund unless the goods are faulty. That's only online.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)2 -
Why was it the shops mistake in the sizing?
The OP tried it on the shop and it fitted at the time - surely they are best placed to know when a ring is on their finger whether it feels loose or not?It was the last ring left, and they decided to take a chance. That isn’t the shop fault. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.8 -
If your hands were hot then, the ring may be loose because you hands were particularly cold when you got home. If you get it resized will it be too small in the summer?Decluttering awards 2025: 🏅🏅🏅🏅⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️, DH: 🏅🏅⭐️, DD1: 🏅 and one for Mum: 🏅2

There is no reason for a shop to tell you that they don't accept return for anything other than the item being faulty. That is the only time they have to accept returns. Although it has been commonplace for shops to accept returns, they don't have to.0

Because the jewellery shop are professionals, and would be completely au fait with hands swelling and shrinking and sizes.elsien said:Why was it the shops mistake in the sizing?

Or are Warren James stores just run by minimum wage paid staff who have no knowledge of their products?!?!?!
My engagement ring was the first ring I'd ever worn. I tried on what I thought was the right size, and the shop explained about it being summer and my hands being warm, so although it slipped on nicely now, it would be rather loose when my hands were cold, especially in winter. They recommended a much smaller size*. I wouldn't have known this as I'd not really thought about wearing rings.
So no, unless you are a regular wearer of rings, then most people wouldn't know how a ring is supposed to feel.
(*as an aside note, Mr Pinkshoes bought his own wedding ring online. He did not pay attention to what the shop said, and his ring ended up lost in a football field thanks to falling off when his hands were too cold. The replacement is two sizes smaller!!)Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

But a much smaller one would too tight in summer when fingers got hit and swelled.pinkshoes said:

I couldn’t wear my eternity ring in summer due to this.0 -

(from someone who has much more than 2 rings)1 -
It's not summer, it's winter, so a protocol based on that assumption would have resulted in an even larger ring.pinkshoes said:
