Surely this is the kind of thing one can expect when most accounts operate either for free or a small fee. If you want an account with bells & whistles perhaps you need to expect to pay for it.
Accounts that offer a better service for more money do not appear to exist. Can you suggest one?

Don't you already get other benefits for your £5 a month ?
When we signed up, these benefits (the notifications) were included, and then they got taken away. That's why we are narked.

What does it cost Santander's computer system to automatically send a SMS message if a given balance condition is met?

If they are that short of money I'd happily go without the SMS OTP they insist on sending every time I log in, and then every time I try to make a payment, no matter how often or recently that payee has been paid before.

Santander didn't argue they needed to make the alerts change on grounds of cost.

Further to my post at 10:10 AM today:
I've had a call from their complaints team member, who said they've had very many complaints about this. He assured me they are definitely adding this to their mobile banking app. He said it had been their intention for it to be there before the web site based options were removed. I suggested that they should not have removed the web site based options until the replacement mobile banking app features were available and he agreed. He is escalating the complaint. Again, I shan't be holding my breath.

I not get an OTP when I log in. I had to enable pop-ups for the Santander website to get rid of them. I do not usually get an OTP for modest payments to my frequently used external accounts. I do not know what the magic ingredient is for that.
