I asked HSBC the same question last month and they said no which is not great if you lose your phone and don't have a spare one.
Having a spare one would not really help as you can only have one authorised at a time.

You can have 3 mobile devices registered with the HSBC app at the same time.

So, is it possible to install the app back and keep using the physical secure key for generating the codes?
Yes, you can use the HSBC app without changing to a digital secure key

See https://www.hsbc.co.uk/help/security-centre/generate-security-codes/ - in particular the "Digital Help Tool"

    Can you elaborate, please?
I selected "How do I set up mobile banking on a new device, or activate a new physical Secure Key" option and then, on Step 8, reached the following:

How do I set up mobile banking on a new device, or activate a new physical secure key Step 8

Your Mobile Banking PIN is now ready to use
Don't forget, you'll no longer be able to use your physical Secure Key

Use a tablet instead of a phone for the mobile app and have a much bigger keypad / display?

The following may or may not be helpful. I am coming at this from a FD perspective.
I was using the physical key until about 2021. Then the battery died. The battery was not replaceable. When I asked FD for a replacement they said it would take a few weeks (admittedly during Covid).
Before you make any decisions it might be worth finding out if the battery in the secure key is replaceable and if not how long it would take to get a replacement from HSBC. If the answer is a few weeks, what will the account holder do in the meantime?
To complete the story, at the time I was persuaded to use my phone as the secure key. FD staff talked me through setting it up including passcodes etc. Have been happily using it ever since. FD staff did say if I didn't get on with the phone secure key, I could always go back to the physical secure key.
