boarding attic and installing ladder

I've been quoted £595 for

widen loft access on one side
install chipboard floor in loft
install 3-tier loft ladder and new door

This includes work and materials.

This sounds reasonable, just wanted to check with anyone who knows what they're talking about!!

Thanks in advance.

Just been running around with the tape measure. It's 790 cm (26 ft) by 460 am (15 ft) approx. he's boarding the whole thing except a foot or so back near the eaves. It's an old house (1910 approx) - don't know if this makes any difference!

Just the boarding, I had already done the centre section but the kids decided they would both go abroad in 2008, son to work in Japan, daughter travelling so needed to board up the remaining 2 thirds of the loft to accommodate their "stuff".

Did it in two sessions, each took 15 packs of boards from Wickes (order through Quidco of course), 15 packs is the minimum order for free delivery. Boards and screws cost about £160 and it took a full day for each session for me, with the wife's stalwart assistance, to complete the job.

With the ladder and hatch thrown in, I would have though that was a good deal. I'd have taken it...

...then search for "Wickes". I ordered 15 packs at a time for free delivery too. 4% Cashback and magically appearred in my garage both times. Saved the journey, the time and the humping - can't fault it.

  • The price is fair but beware one thing. If you start putting boards and storing stuff in your loft, you may well end up with cracked ceilings. These joists were not meant to carry any load.
