1st MOT early test?

My car's 1st MOT is due 23rd May this year.

As I don't have an MOT certificate, I'm not sure if I can present it for test up to 4 weeks (or a month?) prior to that date, and still have a full year till 23rd May 2026.

I always book my cars in as early as possible in case there are any issues, so could anybody please confirm?

Yes, you can, just the same as on a renewal.

It's a month minus a day - so the earliest is 24th April.

On a sub 3 year old car I would be worried if there was a problem with the car.  I wouldn't sweat it too much and get it done as close to the date (but I assume the 30 days prior still works in year 1).

I'm with you on getting an MOT 3-4 weeks early especially the older they get.

The OP said "My car's 1st MOT is due 23rd May", so it's a (nearly) three-year-old car.
OK should have said 1st MOT now edited.

My first mot was the 29/9/19, I took the car in a week earlier for its service and mot.
That way if it fails its mot it could be warranty work so covered. Unless you have a longer warranty.
Sods law a parking sensor went 10 days before, so was covered.

I'd be surprised if a parking sensor would have affected your MOT - I can't find anything in the testers handbook that suggests parking sensors are tested, unless I've missed it: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles

In the OPs position I'd want it in as early as possible because this is the first time it's had an MOT, so there's a potential for there to be faults that might have been "building up" for three years, rather than the usual one year.

The OP did not suggest the parking sensor affected the cars MOT. The parking sensor may have been picked up during the service.

It was about getting anything fixed under warranty, just before it was 3 years old.

***It was about getting anything fixed under warranty, just before it was 3 years old.***

Many years ago we used to invite customers to bring their car in for a Pre-MOT check at 35 months so to pick up any items that might fail on test but would be covered by warranty - very lucrative it was as well until Ford in an audit picked up what we wee doing.

They told us we should not intentionally be looking for warranty work.

Incidently Motability used to have a programme of having the MOT done at 33 months with an instruction to look for items that could be claimed under warranty or under the goodwill programme
