We're used to it unfortunately, I do think we're well stiffed by how many small outcrops of villages (if you can call them that lol) and farms, etc that are very rural contribute to the high SC rates...but small price to pay to live in a nicer part of the countryShedman said:Blimey you wouldn't want to be on capped Electric rate in North Wales and Mersey....

Thanks. I'd already read that article. It was the reference to a forum that I wasn't aware of that puzzled me, and I still don't know what (hys) means. The Welsh language version of the page, perhaps?I'm not being lazy ...

There is a link at the top of the article to 2721 Comments and another one at the bottom to View comments (2721), below a button labelled Get in touch (GIT?) which I assumed had a different purpose. So I'm still not sure where northernstar007 found the (hys) forum referred to, nor indeed where the comments section is often referred to as HYS. It's not always easy being an old pedant!Scot_39 said:HYS / hys - is what the BBC news site user comments section on a selected subset of news articles is often referred to - guess HYS = Have Your Say.OIC, thanks! I scoured that page again and see no mention of HYS or hys or Have your say.I'm not being lazy ...

Sorry to jump back into a slightly old thread for on off-topic comment. Regarding "Have Your Say" on the BBC website, this is the name they used when the ability to comment on a news article was first added many years ago. It has probably gone through several iterations and name changes since then, but those of us who have been online for a long time will be familiar with the name. I knew straight away what "hys" meant (and what a depressing read it was, too).1

Having recently moved from a lifetime in north Wales, interesting to see this - esp as the applications for yet more windfarms and solar farms in the region are being sold as providing cheaper, greener power for xxxk homeslaidbackgjr said:
Yes - some big regional variations - not yet found anything that has explained what's changed in the last 3 months to drive such big variations. I hope OFGEM aren't trialling this as it impacts people's pockets.Shedman said:Blimey you wouldn't want to be on capped Electric rate in North Wales and Mersey....
Some really 'interesting' changes in SC and Unit rates e.g. Southern SC down by over 19p / day (approx 30%) but unit rate up by 2.26p/ kWh (9%) whereas London SC up by 4.5p (10%) but unit rate only up by 0.42p / kWh (1.6%). Are Ofgem trialling certain regions for moving cost from SC to unit rate perchance (haven't read the whole document so maybe its mentioned)?
And whether you are on capped or any other tariff (e.g. Agile / Tracker) - North Wales and Mersey has higher prices than most other regions. It's frustrating when a house 10 minutes walk away from you pays 20p less sc a day for electricity that comes into the village on the same pylons!
There should be an asterisk *does not apply in north Wales and Merseyside0 -
I'm puzzling whether we should change our gas supplier from Octopus (12M fixed, ending 30/12/2025) to the British Gas tariff promoted by MSE
Since last October, we've been living in Yorkshire and racking up gas bills. Prevously we lived in north Wales where we didn't have gas (we used oil, electricity, solar and wood!) so difficult to calculate our likely annual gas spend
Our current fixed Octopus rates are 5.97 p/kw, and 29.65 standing charge, whereas as far as I can see the new BG tariff will be 6.28p/kw and 26.69 standing charge
So swings and roundabouts maybe?0 -
That wouldn't be a big enough incentive (Standing Charge saving) to get me to switch from Octopus to BG. Although I'm not sure BG could tempt me back, but that's not the main issue here.Octopus has £0 exit fees, so you can keep switching tariffs, if the rates improve.I've switched my electric tariff, four times since January. My gas is on a similar December fix to you (different region though), and those rates haven't been beaten yet, but they're getting closer.1
