I still think that where the coat was purchased from (and price point) makes a difference to the pragmatic steps to take, even if the consumer rights are exactly the same.

A coat can be very competitively priced:

    Or less so:

You'd hope the D&G one would be better made, but that might not be the case.

Donkeys years ago I worked in a department store that sold DKNY t-shirts at £95 a pop, they were self striped with alternating solid and slightly sheer stripes... On a different section in the shop there were very similar own brand t-shirts for £25 each.

The DKNY t-shirts literally fell apart in your hands. I unpacked a delivery box of them and 30% were not sewn up properly at the sides, or the body and the sleeves weren't really attached so they never made it out onto the shop floor. The sheer sections were less strong than a pair of 10 denier tights and for those that bought, wore, and then washed (according to the instructions they were machine washable) found they either shrank to half their size, or disintegrated.

I think close to 90% of those sold were returned as faulty, the other 10% probably went in the bin.

The cheaper, similar, own brand ones were of infinitely better quality, so after a while I took to pointing customers over to where they were sold.
