Virgin Media Broadband or FTTP

My Virgin Media contract is coming to an end and FTTP has now arrived in my street according to all the leaflets I am getting through my door.

Is there any difference to the "quality?" of the internet connection between Virgin's coax cable and optical fibre?

I currently get 1000Mbps download and 100Mbps upload speed.

Virgin has just put up my price from £54.50 to £58.50 and when my contract ends in June up by another £40.

I also have a landline from Virgin which I suppose if I switch I would lose that or at least my number.

I also have their TV but I never watch it I prefer SkyQ it so so much faster changing channels and switching to box sets etc.

I got a deal including TV which was actually cheaper than without, crazy innit?

I don't suppose I would be able to knock Virgin down to £39.99?

So the decision I have to make is leave Sky altogether and have Virgin Media for everything or leave Virgin Media and get Sky for everything.

The only thing going for Virgin at the moment as I haven't priced everything up is my landline which my partner wants to keep.

We have just switched from Virgin broadband to Vodaphone FTTP and so far it's proved to one of our best decisions.

Ordering was easy, installation was great from Openreach and our connection has been extremely stable which is vital as my hubby works from home, price is £25.00 for 2 years (May go up by slightly as they do each year by £1 or so) Speed is 150mbps.

We had a really erratic connection with Virgin, constantly rebooting the router and when we reported it to Virgin they told us they'd monitor it and come back to us, of course nothing happened. We were paying £66.00 per month for the pleasure.

With Vodphone you get a free telephone line and you should be able to port your existing number over to the new telephone line free of charge.

We still have Sky for the TV still with no problems with the new Vodaphone connection for streaming YouTube etc..

If you want to keep your existing landline number, it's probably more straightforward if you initially run FTTP and Virgin in parallel for a few days while you get the port done. If your new provider is an Alt-net, it will be cheaper to port your landline to one of the independent VoIP providers. FTTP is better than coax, especially if you're into gaming.

Virgin Media is in the process of upgrading its coax cabling to XGS-PON.
