Have receipt but no box can I return?

Bought a clock radio from Currys and binned the box with the xmas rubbish. 4 days later have only just realised the constant humming it makes when lying next to it.- its loud enough for me to notice now when trying to get to sleep!

From a sale of goods act standpoint, are Currys likely to tell me they can't refund it due to no box?

Thanks guys

No, what counts is proof of purchase.

As its faulty they dont need the packaging.

They would only need all the packaging if they were planning on re selling it, which they wont do if it was faulty!

Just a word of warning, most radio alarm clocks buzz, whether they are Bush or Sony. If it's not a fault they don't have to do anything.

Thanks for advice guys, my old Sony Dreammachine never made any noise unless it was actually turned on.

Surely if currys say its not a fault they all buzz I can say its unfit for its purpose? something designed to sit next to you when asleep should be silent?

If it turns out they all make this buzz I am going to ask for a full refund

If they all make a buzz then it's not a fault. It's just what they do. If it is not a fault with the item then you are not entitled to your money back, even if it does keep you awake.
Problem is, all mains powered alarm clocks are liable to buzz. Transformers are generally soaked in a type of varnish which prevents the coil windings from moving. Thus they make no noise. Cheaper units (i.e.under £40) are less likely to have this varnish or at the most a thinner layer. Therefore they buzz. Even some of the more modern DAB ones are likely to buzz.

Sorry that should have read if all the identical models buzz I will ask for a refund, or an exchange to a better brand which is quiet!

Since my previous one was silent, I am going to state its faulty.

I can just picture the customer service assistants response now, " you will need a box for a refund" :rotfl:

I don't think it would be classed as faulty either as they all do make some sound. I had one once which did the same, I found the noise it made depended on the surface it was on. I placed mine on top of a book and it was then much quieter.

Should be classed as not fit for purpose if they don't think it is faulty! The item is designed to be used next to a sleeping person, if it emits a noise which is loud enough to prevent you from sleeping then it is not fit for purpose, and that is regardless as to whether or not all of them (if the same make) do that.

But then the same would go for a mechanical clock, they tick!
