It's been mentioned. I've got a kill-a-watt device that measures power from one socket. I'm going to do some experiments.

The trouble is when you fill the freezer to full capacity, that is when you break the plastic drawer fronts trying to get the drawers open.

Seriously, this. The fridge+freezer in this place was left previously, and the drawers are all more duct tape than plastic. they could manufacture the drawers out of metal (I'm sure advanced technology could figure out a way for metal drawers not to get a build up of ice), but if the drawers never broke, they couldn't charge £20+ per drawer for replacements. and when I say £20, I probably mean £30.
And everybody's fingers would be stuck to the -23o metal...

That's true. Let me rephrase. There may be an alternate way of manufacturing a product, which does not involve charging £30 for a replacement item which is highly likely to break, in normal use. The disadvantage to that, is that there won't be replacement items which can be sold for £30. I've just thought of a solution to the observation of sticky freezing metal; coat said metal in plastic. I should charge a consultation fee ;-).
I am sure that a 100% plastic freezer drawer front could easily be made that was virtually indestructible, even at temperatures of minus 25 degrees.
It would probably be better than plastic on metal as there would be no risk of delamination and you would probably still be able to see through it .
However it would inevitably be more expensive than the usual type, so.......

I have a Hotpoint freezer with horrible flimsy drawers made from cheap brittle plastic. I've broken all of them just by picking them up, and they're held together by duct tape and willpower. Ghastly things.

My parents had a massive upright freezer with metal basket drawers. The thing was brilliant, and ran without issue for 35 years or so until they downsized and had to get rid of it. The drawers were plastic-coated, so skin freezing to them wasn't an issue, but they eventually got dented and the plastic fronts kept falling off.

I also have a Beko freezer that's about 10 years old, with good quality plastic drawers made from tough plastic. They stand up to a lot of bashing about, and are completely undamaged. I'm confident they'll remain so for the foreseeable future. These are the best I've used. Yes, they're surely more expensive than the Hotpoint ones, but they give such a great impression of quality.

The Beko drawers are probably a big factor in the positive impression I have of that company. I've recommended them to others, IRL as well as on here, and have personally bought a washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and microwave from them. Investing in slightly thicker plastic for the freezer drawers has probably paid off!
