Ryanair Flight Re-routing - Additional Costs Claim

edited 17 February 2025 at 10:51PM in Flight delay compensation
I was in Tenerife in January and our flights back to Edinburgh airport with Ryanair were cancelled due to the bad weather at home. I understand we won’t receive compensation as it was outside their control, but I put in a claim for reasonable expenses as we had to stay for an extra day and a half so incurred additional food and accommodation costs. That was four weeks ago and I’ve heard nothing back other than to say there’s a backlog due to the number of claims resulting from the weather issues. Anyone claimed before that can give an idea of how long it usually takes? The chat bot is useless and more or less saying how long is a piece of string!

I made a claim under similar circumstances many years ago, and they paid after about six weeks. I did not have to chase, and they paid exactly the amount I claimed.

Travel insurance typically won't pay out claims that are recoverable from other parties, so in this case, where Ryanair has a clear legal obligation to pay for accommodation and food during such a delay, insurers are unlikely to stump up, even if actually extracting the money from the airline is a painful and time-consuming process.

Hopefully it’s not last since it’s been with them for four weeks 😂 I also submitted it the day we got home so I’d imagine I’d have been quicker than others in the same position.

Yes travel insurance told me to go to Ryanair. They don’t cover costs because Ryanair are liable.
