You don't even need to spend any money on a solicitor, loads of charities do free wills with a local solicitor. This will be fine for you as I'm assuming your will is a very simple one that's why you are thinking of doing DIY?
I know free wills are often mentioned, but really a donation should be left to the charity providing the service.

It is morally dishonest to take the will (which will only be of the most simple kind) without. Any sort of complexity is likely to have you charged by the solicitor drafting, probably at an extortionate fee. Alternatively, the free will provider uses a will writing service, rather than a solicitor.

Personally I've paid for my own solicitor drafted wills (which contain charity donations). I think this is preferable (and likely better value) as I've taken time to select my solicitor, to ensure they can offer what I want.

OP - look up Coop Legal Services - its listed on this MSE site.

£100 for a single Will, drafted by a Solicitor, processed by legal executive, pretty simple process.

Please don’t, use a local solicitor with a face to face meeting. Don't be tempted to use will writing companies either.
  • New here and seen it mentioned a few times now about not using a will writing company. I haven't yet but was wondering what the problem with them is? My circumstances are quite straightforward and everything will be left to my wife is she's still alive, otherwise split 50/50 between my two children. Looking into getting my will created soon, I'm at the very first step of finding out the best way to do it. I also wanted to leave something more personal behind and have used heavenly-messages.com so that personal messages can be sent to my wife and children at various points in the future, which I thought was a beautiful idea

Or, depending on the recipient... Really distressing. Someone I knew did this and I really didn't want the messages that were sent, however beautiful, and well intentioned.

That's a good point. Did you get them sent to you from the same site? They suggest people can choose not to receive them but I'll look into that a bit more if that's not true

I don't know if its the same site - but it was a similar idea. Some people will like it, others (like me) will be reminded of the loss. You'll probably only get the option not to receive once the first one is sent.

    Think carefully about this.

They aren't trained to the same standard. I didn't find my solicitor drafted will to be expensive, and did it with face to face meetings and by commenting/checking on drafts emailed to me.

My will is also straightforward, and covers the scenario where everyone mentioned predeceases me.

Yes, I think I'd find it a wee bit creepy tbh!

Is there something wrong with using Coop legal services? Will it be invalid or something? At the time, obviously, I'm not going to know. Likewise, if I'd used a solicitor, and there were problems, I wouldn't know either!
