Scam and bank’s responsibility

Dear fellow forum friends,
On Saturday I paid with my Visa card, linked to my current account £50 for what I thought was a brand new electrical item. I checked the blurb . Didn’t know the company but said it was London, had London tele number. Long story short as soon as I didn’t get an instant invoice email for the goods I looked at my bank …the £50 was pending to go through. Then I got an email saying id been given a gift card for the exact money I’d paid on my card and had signed up to subscription s…also it was a sports shop in Cyprus. Anyway….without doubt it’s a scam. The electric company doesn’t exist, no calls rang out I tried. They have taken £50 from my bank and put it on a said sports voucher card. But my question is within 45 mins I rang my bank and told them. This is 10pm sat night. I asked them to stop the transaction as it clearly could be stopped at that point. They said their fraud dept wasn’t open until 9 am Monday morning and only they could stop transactions. I was astounded. I froze my card. Anyway I’ve looked today and the blooming money has gone through. I’m fed up that it could not have been stopped. I wondered if I will get my money back. Will the bank reimburse me or is it a lost cause. It’s a large UK huge bank. Where have the 24 hour fraud team gone these days. Thank you anyway for listening. Bit cross with myself too. More careful next time. Any advice will be helpful.

was this purchase via a website or some sort of social media link?0

It was via a website. You know when you press shopping to see which the best price was. Well this site came up called Manes. It looked legit. I pressed visit web site via the blue link.. I also looked at the bottom .said was London based with London contact number. I just thought it was a small chain electric place that had got a few spare stock of what I wanted . A brand new Ninja food processor.0

That's not how it works - a bank can't just stop a transaction where you've already authorised the merchant to access the funds, even though from your perspective you subsequently believe that it's dodgy.Liz08000 said:But my question is within 45 mins I rang my bank and told them. There'll be a 24 hour mechanism to notify cards being lost or stolen but that's a different scenario, where it's subsequent transactions that'll be prevented at the point of authorisation. In your (post-authorisation) case, if your transaction qualifies for chargeback then you should be reimbursed.Liz08000 said:I was astounded. I froze my card. Thank you. I’m just learning about chargeback on here. I read somewhere there can be an excess so I may not get anything. I’m more annoyed. Yes the lad from the bank said couldn’t stop and had to be fraud team. Just annoyed.0

The excess you've read about is likely to be that applying to authorised push payment scams, which doesn't apply here if you paid by card. No point in getting annoyed/cross/astounded/disgusted just because the bank isn't in a position to bail you out of a careless transaction instantaneously, but be patient....Liz08000 said:Thank you. Don't be surprised if your bank's fraud people brush you off. If you authorised the payment they may not want to treat it as fraud.Liz08000 said:Thank you. I’m just learning about chargeback on here. You probably want to raise a payment dispute and your bank will treat it as a chargeback. (Surprised the person you spoke to didn't clarify what would happen)0 -
No the bank chap just said, well I think, freeze your card and ring in Monday. Yes I’ll raise a dispute if they don’t help. Thanks for your help. Liz0

Yes they can. I rang my bank after making a payment and it was taken twice. Was sitting in pending and the bank stopped one going through and the other allowed to go througheskbanker said:
