Turns out my car needs a new engine, not a replacement sensor....

    Perhaps the dealership may offer to repair at a discount but I don't think they're obliged to after the warranty has lapsed. Best of luck, though, I hope you get some sort of result from this.

    Oh they are. Within 6 months falls under consumer rights. They proposed replacing the engine at their cost but that was in early February. 6 weeks later and I am still without my car. Correspondence is only entered into when I prompt for updates. The car was meant to be returned by 14th March after being advised the engine had arived on 7th March but the last update was that there had been a delay and to expect to wait another 2 weeks. I think 8+ weeks is an unreasonable amount of time to wait so have rejected their repair and requested a replacement vehicle or refund.  And now they've gone silent.
    At least I have their old courtesy car.

    Ah that's good then. I wonder why a lot of places only offer 3 months if they can be called out on the 6 month consumer law? Perhaps to to catch out people like myself who don't know any better lol

    Can you physically go and speak to them? No chance of getting the brush off that way

    I did the first couple of times but they are just the dealer (not in their pay grade) and sent me home to email their warranty department, despite the car no longer being under warranty. The "manager" hides behind the email address. I don't even have a name for him.

    Warranties are offered in addition to consumer rights. There are some special rules in relation to vehicles one of which is that fault appearing within the first six months are presumed to have existed when the purchase took place whereas after six months the onus is on the purchaser to demonstrate the fault was in existence at the time of purchase.

    That's not a stipulation specific to vehicle purchases and applies to any goods:
    goods which do not conform to the contract at any time within the period of six months beginning with the day on which the goods were delivered to the consumer must be taken not to have conformed to it on that day

    (There are various qualifications and cross-references but nothing vehicle-related).

    CAB have given generic advice about requesting use of ADR before Small Claims but the car dealer isn't accredited to the Motor Ombudsman. Is there an independent service I could use? I don't want the dealer  to accept using ADR as a stalling tactic to buy more time if he knows its useless without accreditation. Of course I'd have known this had they given me proof of sale with their terms & conditions.

    Good lord! Having just fired off an email containing my Letter Before Action and Formal Complaint and paying £8.35 for recorded delivery of same, the dealer has replied this morning!! 
    The vehicle has been completed and requires checks before being returned. That's not really what I wanted since I rejected the repair last week, but as long as I get a working car back, with a warranty for the new engine, I guess that's ok. 
    I had been told, when I asked if I would have to inform the DVLA and my insurance about the replacement engine that there was no need to do that. I am sure there is, as the engine number is listed on my V5. I should expect paperwork for this new engine for my records. I do wonder if they have replaced it with a battered old engine that's done 100k+ miles. Where do I stand if that's the case? How will I be able to check? I think IF I get it back, my first call should be the garage for a full check to see what's what.

    The garage that did your check at the start of this thread did a thorough job. Ask them to do a report on the new one.

    You are not out of the woods yet but fingers crossed for you

    If it's a brand spanking new engine it may have come with a blank space for the technicians to copy/stamp the original number.
    I had an engine replacement and actually watched the mechanics stamp on the number from the old engine- block.
    I say 'may' as not all manufacturers do this.
