Did the garage include the trouble codes - Pxxxx - in their report?
P1336 - combustion misfiring cylinder undetermined. Carry out checks
to establish which cylinder has the failure, determined to be cylinder 2
to be at fault. Visual and audible inspection noted that the engine has
a metallic “knocking” noise at idle and get worse when the engine
    speed has raised to 2000rpm.
Check operation of both oxygen sensors, confirm they are working
correctly and the catalyst is working as intended. Both sensors work as
    intended.
Carry out checks to all the ignition coils and spark plugs, all ok.
Removed spark plugs to inspect combustion chambers, found oil
residue built up inside the cylinders. Using an endoscope, inspect the
cylinder linings for any abnormal ware. Found heavy scoring on the
lining of cylinder 2 (see images), cylinders 1 - 3 also have scoring.
    Carry out compression test
    Cylinder 1 - 10 bar
    Cylinder 2 - 10 bar
    Cylinder 1 - 10 bar
Minimum permissible value 10 bar. compression values only just
    meeting specified range.
Engine looks to be burning oil when hot, burning oil will cause the
oxygen sensors to read incorrectly at times this will cause an
intermittent EML and power loss. Cause of the ware suspected to be
caused by failed big end bearings / thrust washers on the crankshaft,
allowing the pistons to rub against the cylinder linings. removal of the
oil sump pan will be required to confirm exact cause.

That's pretty much a slam dunk for the evidence you need to go back to the selling dealer. Of course, they could still choose to repair or replace your car, but I imagine refund, quick bodge, then that car will be sent to auction.

Anyway....with it being within 6 months, if the garage's report includes some issue that wouldn't have turned on the EML (for example, the knocking) then you have a right for them to replace/repair/refund and they have one chance to do so. You don't get to choose which one - but they might offer.

If the vehicle had been much newer, the manufacturer offer a 60,000 mile warranty, so needing a new engine with such low milage is quite unusual.

Usually dealers are quite scared of picking up a bad reputation or having to go to court. Take it back with your report and see what they say. I work in the motor trade and see this loads, they may refund you or sort you another car.

I stuck my head in their office today, gave them a copy of the report and was told to wait for the manager to contact me, hopefully tomorrow.
By the sounds of it, a replacement would be their preferred option. I just hope its sorted soon.
I'll chase tomorrow afternoon if I haven't heard.

So with an hour to go before Close of Business and no response from the dealer since my email on 18th March requesting one by today, I am wondering what my next steps are. I have logged the issue with the CAB as I can't go directly to Trading Standards here in Plymouth, contact has to be made through the CAB. I paid for the car by bank transfer so no finance issue to be able to report to the FOS and they're not accredited to the Motor Ombudsman either. I have a formal complaint ready to fire over tomorrow morning, along with a Letter Before Action requesting a response within 14 days before I start the small claims process. Is there anything else I can do?

Was the car sold with a warranty? Being a 11 year old car, it may come with 6 months? Or did you buy the warranty as an extra? Sorry if I've missed the part where you wrote this

3 month warranty. Had I been working/driven it more, the issues would no doubt have been apparent within that time but as it stands,  the 1st check engine incident occurred on Christmas Day,2 weeks after the warranty expired. Still within 6 months of purchase though.
