MSE News: Got Sky TV? Why you still can't cancel penalty-free if it hikes your price mid-contract

If you've got Sky TV, Sky can put your price up during your two-year contract without telling you what rises to expect before you sign up AND without letting you leave penalty-free. Thought this kind of thing was supposed to be banned? So did we. But our investigation can now reveal that Sky is exploiting a surprising gap in the new rules – leaving its TV customers in the lurch.

Sky always has been a law unto itself.  I love the one that says if you are partway through a contract (to say sky sports & sky tv) and then start a new 24 month contract to Sky cinema they will automatically recontract you for a new full term to both your existing subscriptions.

Frankly these issues exist due to the pathetic inability of modern politicians to draft quality laws and of regulators to protect the rights of consumers

Don't know why this is a surprise, its been the case for years.

I suspect it may be historic because Murdoch was pretty much in bed with governments of the 80s and 90s (especially Thatcher and Blair) and of course if you are in favour with the establishment when new laws come along you can have some input.

not saying that is what happened but the legislation mentioned is from 2003 and who was in government in 2003?

My signature sky package before discounts is going up in April from £36.50 to £40.15, this is a 10% increase.

If your TV package is discounted, Sky base the increase on what the full amount would be.

Never used to happen - % increase was based on the % discount that had been negotiated - but Sky latched on to that and changed to £ discount amounts on contract renewals  - hence the full increases being applied now.

Thanks for this info, it explains why my TV is going up 17% (£4) & Broadband 12.5% (£3).
There I was thinking I'd negotiated a decent deal at the back end of last year! :s

  • In April, my Sky package will be going up from £51 to £57.49 (£4 Sky Signature and £2.49 boost to Netflix) or 12.7%. So well above the 6.2% average quoted.

I received an email back in December to say my Sky Signature would increase from £31 to £36.50 in February. Now the April increase's have been applied it will jump to £40.50. Which I’m slightly confused about as this is more than 10% and our contract doesn’t end till July this year.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My SKY TV contract has ended without any renewal by myself, or without any attempt by SKY to get me to renew either. My SKY Superfast Broadband expires on 10th May 2025.
I am seriously fed up with these price hikes part way through a 'contract', so I am thinking of contacting SKY to give them 1 months written notice for me to leave completely.
Will I suffer any ££ consequences in doing this, and if so what do you think those ££ will be?
