True, half the wall and transmission reduced by half would likely be plenty though. It's a new build and next door is empty at the moment too and so I don't know how much of an issue it will be, especially as I'm deaf, but I'd like to prevent it becoming one with strategic panels on the exposed party walls

Sadly, the way our ears work is dead against you! Our ears are sensitive to low noise levels.

To achieve a halving in perceived noise, you need to reduce the sound level by 90%. That’s why soundproofing is so difficult. If you cover half the wall, you reduce the sound level by a maximum of half, but that would not be a noticeable improvement for your neighbours, I’m afraid. You might as well not bother.

To reduce the noise your neighbours hear by half, you need to cover the whole wall with something that absorbs 90% of the sound energy!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Thank you all for the advice. I might look at the 50mm boards and also see if we feel confident enough to build some studs walls with sound proofing and leave the dot and dab in place :)

3k spent upstairs 3k downstairs on party wall. 90-95% noise gone downstairs, 90% upstairs and both only if they are stood next to the party wall. lost about 12cm from party wall. Company did the lot in 2 days and inc plastering and all making good and moving a socket.

Even looked at moving as the neighbours were feral screaming nightmares. But why should I spend 15-20k moving cause of them!

So 6k overall which was still cheaper than 10k for a hitman!

Eventually they moved so someone elses screaming headache now and the new neighbours are much more considerate. Well we say that but were couldnt hear even if the wernt :-)

Basically frame 75mm from wall, 1 type of acoustic range plasterboard, 1 layer of mass vinyl rubber, 1 layer of different acoustic range plasterboard (I think its due to content and thickness) and a quick layer of plaster.

    100% worth it.
