Amex rewards credit card

I chatted to Amex about cancelling my Amex Gold card because of the annual fee. The assistant suggested I could change to Amex Rewards Credit Card, which has no fee, and asked if I wanted to take the FREE optional Insurance. I'm puzzled. Why is it optional? Is there a catch? If I agree to take take the insurance will I be signing away the normal legal purchase protection that comes with all credit cards? Does anyone know.please? Thanks in advance

insurance for what? I think there's travel insurance but there's likely age limits for that that might make it optional.

very much doubt you could sign away your legal rights no matter what someone in the Amex call centre thinks.

I called one of their agents a couple of weeks ago for the same reason. No mention of any insurance. I did find that the agent was rather poorly informed (he told me something I knew to be wrong about reward points, and this was only corrected because I insisted that he checked). Evidently this scenario is not something covered in their training.

My conclusion: the offer of FREE insurance was perhaps mistaken, and if it matters to you then it makes sense to ask to see details in writing.

These are the details of the free insurance - you can opt out of these benefits if you want to - and for the travel insurance cover it's limited in what it's for, and they recommend you have additional travel cover based on your own circumstances - but it's not a con - and it is complimentary on a number of their cards - I've recently taken the platinum everyday cashback:

Many thanks folks for your responses which are helpful. I need to do something before the fee kicks in so I think I will go for it.
