Kindle won't charge even though charging light is on

I only use it once or twice a year for holidays but this time I left it charging for several hours and it didn't charge. The amber charging light was on but eventually went off and the on/off button doesn't do anything. Tried different chargers and also my laptop and all showed the amber charging light but it didn't charge. The screen just displays the attached: an empty battery and an image to connect a cable to power, Is this the end?

Sounds like the lack of use & a flat battery has killed it.
Batteries do not like being kept flat for extended periods.Life in the slow lane1 -
You could try a factory reset
From the Kindle home page, tap the three dots button in the top right. Then tap 'settings' from the menu. In settings tap 'device options'. Tap 'reset' at the bottom of the options. Tap 'yes' to reset your Kindle to factory settings.

I can't get the Kindle home page, I can only see what's shown in the photo. Turning off/on button does nothing even if held down for a minute before releasing it

Have you tried holding the power button down for exactly 20seconds?
If that doesn't work I think it's dead as a dodo.0 -
Have you tried forcing a reset by holding the power for at least 40 seconds while plugged in ?0

Do you have another cable you could try?0

I've tried different cables/chargers and also tried via laptop and via powerbank, nothing works.

Generally if you leave stuff with a flat battery then you've effectively killed it. Once the battery has gone below a certain level the battery management system will not allow the battery to charge anymore.
Sometimes they can be sort of recovered but you need to take the thing apart and apply power direct to the battery terminals, bypassing the battery management system and getting the battery voltage above the cut-off threshold, but generally it's beyond it unless you can replace the battery. Have a shufti on t'interweb to see video's on how to do it like this - https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=replace+a+battery+in+a+kindle&mid=8D662A6F74B6678A89288D662A6F74B6678A8928&FORM=VIRENever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers2
