BA refusing compensation for flight delayed 12 hours

Hi,  booked through British Airways,  Business Class tickets to fly Christchurch to Sydney.  The flight was operated by Qantas.  Husband and I were due to fly Christchurch to Sydney 17th November 2024 at 6.00am.  We arrived at the airport at 3.30am to discover our flight was delayed until 18.00 that day (12 Hours). As we did not have a connecting flight in Sydney we were refused any alternative flight.  BA have refused compensation and suggest I raise a claim with Qantas.
Please can someone advise if this is my next step?
